On Saturday afternoon, October 20, PCC hosted squash players from Germantown Cricket Club in the annual meeting of the two clubs. There were four doubles and ten singles matches.
Although the prevailing atmosphere was overwhelmingly cordial, there were a number of epic struggles. In singles Geoff Stewart (PCC) came back from 1-2 down to win against GCC’s Ken Jaffe. Germantown’s Anna Adams, originally from Wales, just edged out PCC’s Chip Lee in the fifth game of their tiff. PCC orthopedist Dr. Brett Horwitz managed to take a game from Dr. Bruce Elfenbein, Germantown’s wiliest veteran, but eventually yielded to his more experienced opponent.
PCC’s Mason Blake, Brian Giegerich, and Casey Murray used their exemplary fitness to grind down the opposition without the loss of a game.
The most entertaining doubles match was the last one. Tom Tarantino and Nat Taylor came oh so close against Germantown’s Dr. Ed Bresnitz and Ken Pollack, going from a 2-1 games advantage to a heartbreaking 14-15 defeat in the final stanza. Mr. Tarantino viewed the match in the best possible light, stating afterwards that “we carried them to the fifth and succeeded in our objective of keeping the match close.”
Match results were as follows:
Janine Mazzarelli & Melana Regan (PCC) over Sigrid Veasey & Meghan Juday (3-0)
Steve Abraham & Tom Miraglia (GCC) over Beth Hyde & Garry Duncan (injury default)
Doug Veasey & Ken Kleinman (GCC) over John Madzin & Jim Mazzarelli (3-1)
